No Manpower – No Problem
Remote monitoring and lighting from one command center reduce manpower needs at special events.
With limited manpower during special events, police forces need officers dispersed throughout the event rather than monitoring from the perimeter. The Calera Police Department of Alabama is no stranger to working with limited manpower during city-wide functions and needed a surveillance solution that would reduce the number of officers assigned to monitoring and increase the number on the scene. The addition of remote video and lighting would allow them to observe several areas at once from a single command center. In addition, being able to view activities from overhead would be advantageous to the typically ground-level security viewpoint. Thus, an elevated monitoring option was key to a comprehensive surveillance solution.
Limited manpower and low viewpoints restrict security coverage and impairs response time.
Long hours and strong presence is the name of the game during big city events. Large crowds make it even more difficult to monitor areas, navigate crowds and respond to situations to it was necessary to keep as many officers in the field. Not all special events are held during daytime hours, so a lighting system would be required to illuminate an extended area from the command center, but also to light the vehicle itself and the area directly around it. Raising the camera and the light above the scene was also a necessity to be able to monitor crowds from a safe distance with sweeping range.
For Calera Police, the answer to minimizing manpower was to add an elevated lighting and camera solution with monitoring capabilities from a single command center. After an online product search, our Regional Sales Manager for Alabama, Keith Bousquet, was contacted by Calera’s police chief to inquire about lighting and camera options. As with many of our customers, we were able to schedule an on-site demo to allow the department to see our products first-hand. After discussing their requirements, we provided them with an integrated light tower and camera solution that would require only one officer to be in the command center.
Integrated and multi-functional equipment expands the department’s workforce, security measures and budget.
The equipment solution for Calera PD was a Night Scan light tower with positionable and multi-optic LED lighting (spot and flood dimensions) and a high-definition video camera. Our light towers are low-power consumption towers with extendable ranges from three to 30 ft, depending on the model and payload needs. The lighting package used for Calera PD was a FRC Spectra LED light which includes an RCP (remote controlled positioner) for 360-degree rotation, both laterally and vertically, allowing light control precisely where it’s needed, at any time. The WTI Viper HD IP video camera can be viewed and controlled by a computer in the command center, allowing the department to have eyes on the situation at all times.
Deploy more officers to the field where they’re needed most by reducing the amount of manpower assigned to monitoring.
The combined elevation, lighting, and monitoring package was a complete surveillance and security solution for Calera Police that allowed them to monitor special events during day¬time and nighttime hours using minimal personnel. Prioritizing manpower is key to a proficient police department and an integrated surveillance solution will allow you to allocate your resources where security and safety are the most beneficial.
