New telescopic towers that elevate TV lights will allow French Open tennis matches to be held at night
September 10, 2020

The Will-Burt Company, located in Orrville, Ohio is known throughout the world as the leading manufacturer of mobile elevation solutions ranging from telescopic masts, towers, positioners and integrated communication systems.

Over the past few months, Will-Burt has worked with their distributor in France, Cricet, to supply customized telescoping light towers to the Roland Garros tennis grounds in Paris, home of the French Open. The French Open is the premier clay court tennis championship tournament in the world and the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments. To date, the tournament has been held during the day because lighting was not available. Thanks to Will-Burt’s expertise in the design and manufacture of telescopic light towers, some of the tennis matches will be held during the evening for the first time in 2020.

These are no ordinary light towers. These pneumatic masts are designed to be mounted at the base into a heavy slab of concrete while being able to withstand strong winds. The TV lights that will be elevated at night and will be lowered during the day, weigh several hundred pounds and require a tremendous amount of power. The power is delivered via a large coiled cable that runs inside of the mast, eliminating unsightly external power lines. Five courts will be under lights by the beginning of the tournament September 21st and another 4 courts will receive lights by the end of the year.

Richard Lewin, CEO and President of Will-Burt states, “I am extremely proud of the employee-owners that rose to the challenge of completing this project successfully and on-time. We were given a short timeline to design, manufacture, and test these customized telescopic masts. The challenge was met, and we are looking forward to seeing our product lighting the courts of the tournament.”
